The interdisciplinarity of the SAOT research and educational activities is already manifested in the working structure of the six different SAOT topics applying optical technologies. The direct knowledge exchange between the principal and associated investigators and the Doctoral Candidates from different topics provides new insights and perspectives, such enabling creative solutions for current problems. It is also enhanced by the broad thematic focus the international research partners are bringing into SAOT. Interdisciplinarity of SAOT activities will be further encouraged through the establishment of two new SAOT research and training centers (OICE and PMRC) during the 2nd funding period which will intensify the integration of the life sciences and the medical faculty into SAOT research and education.
