Participation in the Pattern Recognition Symposium (Flyer) organised by the Pattern Recognition Lab will be acknowledged as monthly meeting. Each half day counts as one monthly meeting in the field of Compuational Optics.

CBI-Colloquium 23rd October 2014

Dear Doctoral Candidates,

During the CBI-Colloquium, there will be a talk entitled "in situ Ramanspektroskopie für die (Hochdruck)-Verfahrenstechnik", which will be given by Dr.-Ing. habil. Andreas Bräuer. The presentation, which will take place on Thursday, 23.10.2014 at 4:15 p.m. in H3, Egerlandstrasse, 91058 Erlangen, will be held in German.

Participation to this talk will be considered as Monthly Meeting and will be assigned to Optical Metrology for 0.33 CPs.

Selected Topics In Digital Imaging: Image Digitization, Resampling and Building Continuous Image Models

Lecturer: Prof. L. Yaroslavsky, Professor Emeritus, Deptartment of Physical Electronics, Faculty of Engineering, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel

Image digitization, resampling and building continuous image models are fundamental issues of digital imaging.

In the course presented are general principles of image digitization, fundamentals of sampling theory, optimal methods of image quantization, principles of image perfect resampling with applications to image geometrical transformations, precise numerical integration and differentiation and image reconstruction from projections.

The course is intended for the graduate level and is supported by exercises in Matlab.

We proudly announce the monthly meeting in March 2012 with the topic "Computational Optics". We invite the topic members, the related PIs and mentors as well as everyone who might be interested, to participate.

The Monthly Meeting in "Computational Optics" will take place on Tuesday, 20.03.2012 at 4:30 p.m., in Cauerstr. 11 (room no. 00.133). There will be two talks given by Thomas Graupeter and Fan Feng. Thomas Graupeter will also do a demonstration of a computer programme for the laser simulation.

Thomas Graupeter: "Stability analysis of solid-state lasers regarding thermal lensing effect"

Abstract: The stability of solid-state lasers is influenced by the thermal lensing effect in the crystal. This effect is based on the deformation of the end faces of the crystal and the temperature dependence of the refraction index. It also depends on the photo-elastic effect produced by thermal induced stress in the crystal.
The analysis of the photo-elastic effect is important for high power lasers and for lasers with a radially polarized laser beam. In this work, we use FE model to calculate the deformation, heat and stress distribution in the laser crystal with high accuracy. We also simulated the refraction index anisotropy with respect to the crystal orientation using the calculated stress distribution. As a result of our simulation, we can study stability of laser resonators for both radially and azimuthally polarized laser beam.

Fan Feng: "Dynamic multimode analysis (DMA) of passively Q-switched intra-cavity frequency-doubling solid state laser"

Abstract: We derive a new model to simulate passively Q-switched intra-cavity frequency-doubling solid-state laser. By introducing a nonlinear loss term caused by frequency-doubling crystal into the rate equations, we can express the effect of second-harmonic generation (SHG). We apply a finite volume discretisation on gain medium, saturable absorber and frequency-doubling crystal. ``Dynamic Multimode Analysis (DMA)" and several Gaussian modes are utilized. At the end, numerical results of passively Q-switched intra-cavity frequency-doubling solid-state laser are presented. In the case of large pump radius, chaotic phenomenon can be observed numerically. In order to realize the 3D simulation, we mainly use two techniques: One is that common rate equations are extended to a set of  3D multimode rate equations, which calculate photon number for different modes separately. The other is to take into account a finite volume

The last part is lab tour in the CPL. There will be shown the principal stuff of diffuse reflection spectroscopy for detection of superficial blood vessels (Rajesh Kanawade).
