Career development through research funding

25th October 2012, 4.00-8.00 pm, 26th October 2012, 9.00 am-5.00 pm

The seminar gives an introduction into the scientifc system and funding programmes for the development of a scientific career and invidual projects. It covers the aims and characterisitics of selected programmes and how to apply there (both German and European programmes). The students learn about the perspectives of a reviewer. The mechanism of a peer-reviewing process are illustrated by a simulated peer-review of a students' own project. The lecturer formerly worked for the 'Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft' (DFG).

Modules:

  • Presentation of imporant German and European research programmes
  • Developing a personal career plan. The attendants are supported in the selection of the research programmes which fits best to their needs and scientific background
  • Writing a proposal. This module covers how to identify the main targets of a research programme which should be met by a proposal and which criteria reviewers have for evaluating a proposal.
  • Excercise. Attendants of the course work on a short draft for a proposal and present it to the group.

How to survive in a job interview

01st June 2012, 09.00 a.m. to 05.00 p.m. , plus one hour on 2nd or 3rd June

The two-day-course trains the student how to perform in a job interview

  • On the first day the usual structure of and requirements in a job interview are presented and recommendations are given how to perform successfully. In small role plays the theory is put into practice.
  • On the second or third day each student will attend a real 'live' simulation of a job interview.

On the first day the whole group works together. On the second/third day individual time slots for the students will be scheduled. Therefore time required for each single student is only the first day (1st June) and about one hour on the second or third day (2nd or 3rd June) and the maximum number of attendants is limited to sixteen. We ask for a registration by 15th April in order to know whether one or two days for the invidual interviews are needed.
