Manufacturing of optical freeform surfaces

There is an increasing great demand of freeform optics from various fields, such as optics, photonics, optic fiber communication and many other areas. The advantages in employing freeform surfaces are obvious in creating new equipment and instruments, improving existing systems performance, lowering products cost and reducing devices size. In this plenary speech, ultra-precision machining of freeform surfaces is reviewed and three-axis single point diamond turning is discussed in details particularly. The interrelation between cutting tool and workpiece is the main issue in freeform surfaces. The interrelation will affect the machining accuracy, surface finish and even damage the machine, cutting tool and workpiece.
