Application to MAOT

Application Procedure for Germans and "Bildungsinländer"

German students and so called "Bildungsinländer" (international students with a German first degree) go to

Online Application Portal for Master's Degree Programmes

and follow the on-screen instructions. They fill the online form, print out the application form and send it together with the required documents to the 'Masterbüro' at the given adress. After the confirmation of the formal eligibility by the 'Masterbüro' it is forwarded to the programme representatives for an academic evaluation. The applicants are informed by the programme then whether they are invited to an interview and whether there are further requirements.

This will not be possible before end of April / early May.

Application procedure for international students

Step 1: Evaluation of academic qualifications

The application for step 1 is dealt with by academic representatives from the programme MAOT. In step 1 the whole application is to be submitted electronically. No hard copies should be sent unless explicitly requested.

Applications must be submitted by sending an email with all required documents as attachements to:

juergen.grossmann@aot.uni-erlangen.de.

The following documents must be submitted:

  • Completed application form (Excel file) as an excel file. Please do not change the name of the xls file.
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) which includes details of school and higher education
  • Scans of the certificates and transcripts of all academic degrees, which should comprise the actual degree and a transcript listing all courses attended and grades achieved (only documents in English or German, no other languages). A Bachelor's degree (or an equivalent qualification) in Physics or a relevant engineering subject is the minimum entrance requirement

In special cases a Bachelor's in a scientific subject other than Physics is acceptable where sufficient knowledge of optical technologies can be demonstrated.

You can also apply, if you have not yet completed your previous Bachelor. Please submit all documents about your study which are at your disposal (in particular a transcript of records is substantial). It does not lower your chances to be admitted if you have not yet completed the previous Bachelor.

  • Scan of the high school or secondary school diploma (also including courses and grades).
  • Proof of sufficient English language skills. This can be done by English courses included in high schoool or university education, experience with English speaking programmes, international stays or an international certificate such as Toefl or IELTS (Toefl code: 8265). An international certificate is not (!) mandatory. There is no specific threshold for the English language skills, but in the recent years the level of the applicants being admitted was usually not lower than about IELTS 5.5 or Toefl IBT 90.
  • Proof of sufficient German language skills. In order to immatriculate at the University of Erlangen students must prove German language skills on the level A1. This proof can be submitted at the time of the application, at the time of the immatriculation (September/October 2017) or within one year after the immatriculation
  • Letter of motivation (ca. one A4 page) including information on the following THREE questions:
  1. Why do you want to study optical technologies?
  2. Why do you want to study in Germany and on an international, English-speaking programme.
  3. Why are you particularly interested in MAOT?

File formats

The application form must be submitted as an excel file. All other files should be submitted in PDF format and must be comprised in one file. Therefore, the meximum number of files to be submitted is two files: one excel file (application form), one pdf file with the rest of the documents. The preferred order of the documents in the pdf-file is:

  1. CV
  2. letter of motivation
  3. transcript of most previous University degree programme
  4. degree of most previous University degree programme
  5. if applicable: transcript / degree of further University degree programme
  6. letters of reference (if available, not mandatory for the first submission)
  7. further documents

The accuracy with which these guidelines are followed will be considered as an indicator for the capacity of the applicant to work thoroughly.

Telephone interview

Usually about 4-6 weeks after the email application applicants will be informed whether they are invited to a telephone interview with one of the professors from MAOT and will be asked to submit letters of reference. Applicants who don't get an invitation cannot be considered for the programme.

After the interview, a decision on whether the applicant has passed stage 1 will be made based on the quality of the other applications. No applicant should start the procedures for step 2 until he/she has been explicitly asked to do so.

Step 2: Formal evaluation

The second step is dealt with by Master's Admissions office, which is part of the central administration of the University. They will evaluate an applicant's certificates according to the formal requirements for admission to the University.

Details for this step will be given to applicants after having passed step 1.

This formal evaluation is done after the academic one as the rejection rate for the academic evaluation is remarkably higher. However, a first formal check is already included in step 1 and serious problems would already be identified.
